Cooling Treatment Treats Brain Injuries and Stroke, Says Study May 21, 2018 10:19

An India-origin man, including other researchers have found from a study that head injury and stroke can be treated by inducing cooling in a brain to lower temperature.Lowering the brain temperature after head injury or stroke may relieve pressure inside the head and can avoid swelling and further complications, especially in critical cases as it can impact the blood vessels and tissue throughout the brain. It also found that cooling treatment may help infants at risk of long-term damage from birth complications without having to cool their entire body. The infants from Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can reduce their core brain temperature from a normal level of 37 degree Celsius to 36 degree Celsius which is recognized as low enough to help in healing. The team involved in a study which was published in Journal scientific Reports developed a robust 3D model that scans the entire brain or parts of it showing the brain neuron predicting temperature and blood flow by using computer simulations. The model takes simultaneous flow, heat transfer and metabolism into account between arteries, veins and brain tissue in three dimensions of through out the organ."Our sophisticated model should enable speedy progress in developing optimum treatments involving brain cooling, and support the development of studies on brain health," said study lead Prashant Valluri from University's School of Engineering. The researchers said, it could also be modified to inmate the effects of stroke and also impact of drugs administrated.By Sowmya Sangam

California: Sandia National Laboratories in California, led by an Indian-origin scientist with his team has demonstrated a new technology based on bio-engineered bacteria to produce chemicals that are economically feasible from renewable plant sources. The technology enables to convert tough plant matter, called lignin for broad use of energy source and making it cost competing.Lignin is an element of plant cells walls that gives them incredible strength, though it is brimming with energy but getting to that energy is so expensive and complex resulting in bio-fuel noncompeting economically with other forms of transportation energy.Seema Singh, Sandia bioengineer said, “For years, we have been researching cost-effective ways to break down lignin and convert it into valuable platform chemicals.”She further added, “We applied our understanding of natural lignin degraders to E. coli because that bacterium grows fast and can survive harsh industrial processes.”Singh and her team has resolved cost, toxicity and speed difficulties with turning lignin into platform chemicals."Now we can work on producing greater quantities of platform chemicals, engineering pathways to new end products, and considering microbial hosts other than E. coli," Singh said.By Sowmya Sangam

High Court Of Bombay Steps In To Help NRI Man To Beat Charges On Domestic Violence May 19, 2018 13:43

The Bombay High Court (HC) has come to the rescue of an NRI in the US, overturning a lower court order passed in favour of his wife who had filed a domestic violence case against him. The woman had demanded maintenance of Rs 5 lakh a month and accommodation, of which the family court in Pune had ordered the man to pay Rs 2 lakh a month. The man challenged this order in HC, claiming there was no domestic violence, and because the wife had been unable to give any instance of physical or mental violence, the HC set aside the family court order and instructed it to reconsider monthly maintenance to the estranged wife. The maintenance has now been brought down to Rs 25,000. The couple was married on July 11, 1997 and lived in Houston, Texas, till 2004. They have a daughter still studying there and a son, who is currently with the mother in Pune. The husband said the woman had lost interest in married life and approached the family court in Pune to remove the children from his custody. The woman also made an application asking for maintenance of Rs 5 lakh per month and reimbursement of the son's school fees to the tune of Rs 50,000 under section 20 of the Protection of Domestic Violence Act. She told the court that the man's monthly salary was Rs 15 lakh, with perks of another Rs 5 lakh. The family court took into consideration the fact that it was the responsibility of the man to maintain his wife and children, and awarded maintenance of Rs 2 lakh a month. The husband moved the high court against the verdict and also submitted an affidavit to show that the company he was working for had been placed under the control of an official liquidator and under these circumstances it was difficult for him to pay the Rs 2 lakh in maintenance. In the affidavit, he also stated that he was paying for his daughter's education in the US through a loan and was also paying for his son's education. Justice Bharati Dangre, after hearing both parties, observed that the wife could not give a single instance of any act of domestic violence, which would have brought her under the category of 'aggrieved person', entitling her for benefits under Section 12, including section 20 of the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The HC directed the family court to reconsider the application for maintenance within a period of three months. Till the family court decides the matter, the husband has been directed to pay an amount of Rs 25,000 per month to the wife towards maintenance. The husband has also been directed to bear the educational expenses of the son and not default in payment of his school fees.
